Capt. Bobby does not condone lifting large Tarpon out of the water. The State of Florida's lead Tarpon researcher, Dr. Kathy Guindon, reported that lifting tarpon causes undue stress to the fish and greatly decreases its chance of survival. Therefore Capt Bobby no longer participates in this practice. Dr. Kathy also said that placing a small release gaff in the bottom lip of a Tarpon for greater control of the fish and for taking in the water boat side pictures does no additional harm to the fish. She compared it to a human's' ears being pierced. Once the fish is properly revived and released it will continue to feed normally and the small hole will heal over.
